Earth Hour is an international annual event organized by Fund for Nature (WWF) in order to maximize the attention of the entire world community to the problem of climate change on our planet, demonstrating a careful attitude to natural resources. On this day, at a certain time, more than 2 billion people around the world (more than 170 countries and about 7,000 cities) turn off their lights and other electrical appliances for one hour. Earth Hour 2016 will take place on March 19 from 20:30 to 21:30 local time.
The first Earth Hour was organized in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The action was a huge success: more than 2 million people took part in it, and the following year 35 countries of the world joined. The action is also held at the state level - power is cut off at various significant facilities, such as the Empire State Building (New York), the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco), the Colosseum (Rome), the Opera House (Sydney) , the Buddhist temple "Wat Arun" (Bangkok), the Royal Palace (Stockholm), City Hall (London), the Eiffel Tower (Paris), the Acropolis (Athens) and many others. In Moscow, the illumination of the building of Moscow State University on the Sparrow Hills, the Luzhniki sports complex, the Shabolovskaya TV tower, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and others were turned off.
The problem of climate change has now acquired a global scale and the highest priority. Not only politicians and eco-activists, but also many celebrities, royalty and religious figures .
