At the end of September, the UK government department responsible for energy strategy (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; BEIS) published new statistics on energy generation and consumption in the country. Renewable energy has set a new record in the second quarter of 2017 , reaching a share of 29.8% of all electricity generated in the UK.
The energy generated in the second quarter in the UK was distributed as follows:
- gas - 41.3%;
- renewable sources (wind, water, sun, biofuels) - 29.8%;
- nuclear - 23.6%;
- coal - 2.1% (a sharp decline was recorded compared to 5.9% in the last quarter) ;
- other species - 3.2%.
Types of renewable energy in the UK:
- bioenergy (biofuel) — 36.38%;
- ground wind power plants - 25.77%;
- solar energy - 17.18%;
- offshore wind energy (wind farms on water in coastal areas) - 17.1%;
- hydropower - 3.52%.
The UK is known for having the largest offshore wind farm , helping the whole of Europe to set new records in this regard. For example, on one day in early October 2017, countries in Europe achieved 263 GWh (gigawatt hours) of energy from offshore wind turbines, about 36% of which was generated in the UK.
Other good renewable energy news from the UK is the opening this week of Blackburn Meadows battery plant At the same time, two local companies are building two other plants with a capacity of 49 megawatts each on the site of a former power plant in Cumbria and a gas-fired power plant in Nottinghamshire.
