San Francisco became the first city in the US to take a new revolutionary step in the fight against environmental pollution by introducing a ban on the sale of water in plastic bottles up to 0.6 liters.
According to the adopted resolution, within 4 years, plastic bottles up to 21 ounces (620 ml) will be phased out of the market in public places in San Francisco, California. Violators of the law will be fined up to 1000 USD. Joshua Arce of the city's Environment Commission said the restriction is "another step towards zero-waste." San Francisco is aiming to eliminate new waste from the city's landfills by 2020. The current level lags behind the target by 80 percent.
This restriction is not as strict as was adopted for 14 national parks and many US universities, where plastic bottles have been completely banned. But in general, California is a leading state in terms of ecology and reducing the amount of garbage. In particular, it has already adopted regulations to ban plastic bags and products with plastic microbeads .
