HomeNewsSouth Australia to Build the Region's Largest Battery-Powered Solar Power Plant

Australia's largest solar power plant is currently the Nyngan Solar Plant, generating 102 MW of power.

Australian construction and investment company Lyon Group announced the launch of a project in the south of the country to create the region's largest solar farm and battery system. The total cost of the project is estimated at 1 billion US dollars.

The solar power plant will consist of 3.4 million solar panels and 1.1 million batteries. Its construction in southern Australia's Riverland region will begin in the coming months, and is expected to be operational by the end of this year, regardless of a local government tender for a large renewable energy storage battery. The new power plant will be able to produce 330 MW of energy and store at least 100 MW.

The creation of large-scale solar power plants with batteries integrated into them is a necessary part of any step towards “decarbonization” (generation of electricity without carbon dioxide emissions), according to Lyon Group partner David Green. South Australian Prime Minister Jay Weatherill has already endorsed the initiative and said the battery is part of the local government's plan to develop electricity in the region and will receive $150 million in funding.

PS The world's largest solar power plants, according to Wikipedia , operate in China (Longyangxia Dam Solar Park with a capacity of 850 MW), India (Kamuthi Solar Power Project, 648 MW) and the USA (Solar Star, 597 MW). According to this information, the system in South Australia can take the 12th line of the global ranking.
