MainNewsUkraine will report on pollutants under the PRTR Protocol of the Aarhus Convention

On May 3, 2016, the Government of Ukraine ratified the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers to the Aarhus Convention, becoming its 34th party. It was adopted within the framework of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in 1998 in the city of Aarhus and entered into force on October 30, 2001.

The protocol to the Convention concerning registers of releases and transfers of pollutants was approved in May 2003 in Kiev and entered into force on October 8, 2009. Participation in the Convention means maintaining a nationwide register and report on releases and transfers of pollutants, including heavy metals, greenhouse gases, carcinogens and substances that cause acid rain.

This protocol will allow tracking the largest and most influential sources of environmental pollution, as well as obtaining open comprehensive information on these issues to any interested citizen. The full name of the Aarhus Convention is the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters.

For Ukraine, the policy of tracking and controlling sources of environmental pollution is very relevant, since as of September 2015 it is in the TOP-10 countries that are dangerous to the life of the population due to the high level of radioactive contamination, as well as the content of carcinogens in the atmosphere due to fires.
