HomeNewsKochi Airport (India) is the first in the world to operate entirely on solar energy

On August 18, the official launch of a solar power plant at the Cochin International Airport (COK) in the state of Kerala (India) was announced, which became the first in the world to be completely powered by solar energy .

Energy for the airport is generated by a solar power plant, consisting of 46,150 solar panels located on 45 acres in the cargo terminal. Its power is 12 MWp (megawatt-peak). The system provides the airport with 50-60 thousand kilowatt-hours, which covers all its needs. The authors claim that the solar energy generated by the airport's power plant is enough to power 10,000 homes.

The use of the renewable energy source selected at the Kochi International Airport has a positive impact on the environment. As a green electricity project, the airport is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes (compared to coal-fired power plants) over the next 25 years, the equivalent of planting 3 million trees.

Kochi Airport is the largest and busiest in the state of Kerala in southern India and the third largest in terms of international passenger traffic in the country. The annual passenger flow reaches almost 7 million people (more than half of them are international flights), and the total number of aircraft flying through the airport over the past year has exceeded 53,000.
