HomeNewsWorld's largest floating solar power plant launched in Japan

Japanese companies Kyocera and Century Tokyo Leasing announced the launch of the world's largest floating solar platform, located in the city of Kasai, Hyogo prefecture (Kasai, Hyogo) on the surface of the Sakasamaike pond.

The 2.3 megawatt plant generates enough energy to power 820 typical households. Due to the rapid development of the solar panel industry in Japan, there are fewer and fewer areas suitable for agricultural purposes. Therefore, the construction of floating platforms is rapidly developing. A year earlier, two panels on water with a capacity of 1.7 and 1.2 megawatts were also built.

This platform has more than 9,000 photovoltaic panels with a total area of 25,000 square meters and covers about 40% of the water. Some of the claimed features of this technology include:

  • floating solar systems are able to generate more energy due to the water cooling effect;
  • reducing water evaporation and algae growth by providing shade;
  • solar panels are 100% recyclable, made of high density polyethylene and do not corrode;
  • technology makes it possible to withstand heavy loads, even in the event of a typhoon.
