We all sometimes strive for what is not there - this also applies to food, especially in the cold season, when the choice of local vegetables and, especially, fruits becomes very limited. However, buying the gifts of nature from your region is very beneficial for many reasons:
- The ecological footprint is reduced because the goods do not need to be transported from distant places.
- Local products are fresher, more mature and usually more natural because they are not delivered from far away and do not need special processing for long storage / transportation.
- Seasonal products are best because they originated in a certain climate that is natural for the inhabitants of the region.
- The development of local agriculture is supported: both financially and in terms of careful attitude to cultivated lands.
- Communications and relationships within the local community are being strengthened, especially if you buy products directly from their manufacturers (in markets, fairs, in company stores).
If the same products with origins from different regions are presented, think: do distant competitors have such significant features that they surpass the listed advantages of local products?
Of course, this does not mean that you should go to extremes and deny yourself everything, but you can always minimize and consider your consumption - especially if it will benefit not only you, but the Planet as a whole. Remember that your choice affects the demand that forms the supply in the market.
